Chiefly Civil War letters of a private in the 66th Ohio Regiment, mostly to his wife, Mary Milledge Diltz, but also includes letters of the Diltz and Milledge families. Topics include campaigns and battles, military life, execution of deserters, appearance of battlefields and hospitals after battles; Copperheads (nickname for a faction within the Democratic Party), Confederate military prisons; the Ohio gubernatorial election of 1863; the assassination of Abraham Lincoln; and politics. Letters from Catherine Diltz, Joseph's mother, in Iowa list wartime commodity prices, land prices, and wages.
